It usually involves the removal of excess facial skin, with or without the tightening of underlying tissues, and the redraping of the skin on the patient’s face and neck. A mini facelift incision often begins behind the ear. After the skin incision is made, the skin is separated from the deeper tissues with a scalpel or scissors (also called undermining) over the cheeks and neck. The SMAS fat may also be removed with the intention of lessening the smile lines on the face. At this point, the deeper tissues (SMAS, the fascial suspension system of the face) can be tightened with sutures, with or without removing some of the excess deeper tissues. The skin is then redraped, the excess skin is removed, and the skin incisions are closed with sutures and staples. A neck lift, or platysmaplasty and even submental platysmaplasty, is a surgery designed to reduce the loose look of sagging skin in the neck area and under the jaw line. Some patients who complain of having a fleshy neck, jowls, plastysma or neck banding, or a turkey waddle can benefit from this procedure.
